DVC students win at Chinese Bridge and CLTAC Mandarin speech contests

Chinese Bridge competition students standing with awardsThis past April, students from Diablo Valley College participated in the Chinese Bridge Speech Contest held at San Francisco State University, and the CLTAC Mandarin Speech Contest, held at Lowell High School in San Francisco.

The 16th annual Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition was attended by four DVC Mandarin students who competed against students from San Francisco State University, CSU East Bay, City College of San Francisco, and UC Berkeley. The competition was organized by the Confucius Institute at SFSU and was sponsored by the Hanban/Confucius Institute which is headquartered in Beijing China, and the Education Office of the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco. 

CLTAC students standing with awardsLater in the month, 26 DVC students competed in the 42nd CLTAC Mandarin Speech Contest in San Francisco. The contest, hosted by the Chinese Language Teachers Association of California, is the largest of its kind in the country, and more than 600 Bay Area Chinese students participated in this year’s contest.

DVC Mandarin students competed against students from 13 other Bay Area colleges and universities, including City College of San Francisco, CSU East Bay, Defense Language Institute, San Francisco State University, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and University of San Francisco, among others. 

Professor Sheree Lin, head of DVC’s Chinese program, congratulates all the students who participated, and gives special thanks to the speech coach Han Lu, all of Chinese tutors, teacher assistants, the Foreign Language Department and the Applied and Fine Arts Division for their support.
