How to calculate your GPA
What is GPA?
GPA stands for grade point average. How is GPA calculated?
Courses are given a letter or CR/NC grade. (See catalog for information about CR/NC.) CR/NC courses do not affect your GPA.
| Letter grades have the following point value: | Letter grade Point value |
| A | 4 |
| B | 3 |
| C | 2 |
| D | 1 |
| F | 0 |
Each course is assigned a number of units – ex. English 122 is a 3-unit course.
The number of units is multiplied by the number of points.
GPA = total number of points ÷ total number of graded units
Example:
| Course | Units | Units | Grade | Grade points |
| English 122 | 3 | 3 | B | 9 (3x3) |
| Psych 122 | 3 | 3 | A | 12 (3x4) |
| BioSc 102 | (4) | 4 | CR | 0 |
| History 120 | 3 | 0 | F | 0 (3x0) |
| Health Sc 124 | 3 | 3 | D | 3 (3x1) |
| PE 106 | 1 | 1 | A | 4 (1x4) |
| TOTAL | 13 | 14 | 28 | 2.154 |
Overall GPA ~ 28 (graded points) ÷ 13 (graded units) = 2.154
